Toronto definitely wouldn’t be the same without the massive loft buildings and the lingering spirit of industrialism which can be strongly felt in some Downtown Toronto neighborhoods. Loft living is as popular as ever and no matter if its soft or hard lofts, residents can’t simply get enough of the red brick walls, high ceilings and the sophisticated interiors found in Downtown Toronto lofts. Downtown Toronto lofts are not only popular because of their irresistible architecture but also because of their attractive location and all-around amenities. All of them offer great features not found in new construction homes and that’s what makes them stand out. If you are looking for a loft in Downtown Toronto, you should definitely check out the following:
Toy Factory Lofts
Toy Factory Lofts in Liberty Village are known for the classic red brick walls and the ultimate loft design with large windows and high ceilings. It is a seven story building with 200+ units in which the first four stories are original and the upper three are an extension but still capturing a lofty look and feel. It was officially completed into loft units in 2008 and the surrounded neighborhood has just exploded with all the conveniences of life within steps. Despite its conversion, some of the original features were kept like the steel ceiling beams, wood ceilings on some floors and thick brick walls. The units differ in size from less than 700 to 2,000 square feet, and most come with parking. Outdoor hot tub on the terrace, a concierge and guest suites are just some of the amenities found here… and all that for fairly acceptable maintenance fees which are probably one of the lowest in all the City of Toronto. The building truly stands out amongst the high and mid-rise condos in the neighborhood and are a dream for many Torontonians.
The Candy Factory
Once known for the production of Smarties, this loft building is now the most exquisite place for trendy loft living. Exposed pipes, wooden ceilings, inner brick walls and open layouts account for a genuine historical feel in these modern residential units. Toronto sunsets have been described as spectacular from the windows and terraces of these lofts which offer an astonishing view of Queen West. The lofts are very spacious which makes them great for large families. Besides the many amenities available in and around the building, residents also enjoy the Trinity Bellwoods Park right across the street. Hard to come by, these units are snatched up quickly once they hit the market.
Broadview Lofts
The former Queen Street East warehouse started to transform into a residential building in 2003 but developers stayed true to some original elements, so they kept the 12-foot ceilings, the original water tower on the roof and the floors but they added two additional glass stories giving the building a unique look. Layouts are very open and some units come with a balcony which is rare for a loft. Varying in size from 800 to 1,600 square foot, all of the units seem to be a perfect blend of functionality and history. The location, the style and interior décor meet the needs of different age groups.
Tip Top Tailors Lofts
Tip Top Tailors Lofts are a mixture of white and glass, with no red brick in sight. The Art Deco style combined with modern open design makes this building stand out. This true Toronto gem at Queens Quay Harbourfront is surrounded by many great amenities, e.g., green spaces, the lake, jogging paths, etc. Fully converted in 2006, it stands now as one of the most desirable residential buildings. It has 160 hard and 96 soft lofts and amenities such as visitor parking, yoga room, fitness center, concierge. Water’s edge at your doorstep and with a quick streetcar ride you are in the heart of the financial District, this make it a great Loft to live in Downtown Toronto.
Distillery District Lofts
The Distillery District was a major industrial center, and now it has come back to life as a lively neighborhood known for its great location near the Financial District, amenities, and of course, loft living. The Distillery District Lofts are a great choice for young professionals and families who love all modern-day conveniences but also a whiff of history. One or two-story units with private terraces and amazing views of Downtown Toronto can be found here. The hard lofts were successfully mixed with new construction Condos that still maintain the charm of the area but bringing more people and life to the Distillery District.
Merchandise Lofts
The last loft on my list is definitely an important one as it is an iconic building in the heart of downtown Toronto that takes up an entire city block and is the largest loft building in Toronto. The Merchandise building dates back to 1930 where it was constructed as the original Sears Warehouse building. The largest conversion of its kind happened in 3 years between 1999-2002 converting the old warehouse into 450 stunning loft units. All lofts have 12 foot high exposed concrete ceilings, mushroom fluted columns and large windows, some capturing an amazing view of the inner core as it is a short walking distance to Dundas Square and Eaton Centre. Besides being a unique loft with great amenities and open airy spaces, the location is really a big selling feature here.
